A few weeks ago, I submitted one of my pieces (the recently popular You Might Be an Asshat if You Never Tell Your Kid to Hurry Up post) to Blogger Idol 2013. I thought it would be good to get some experience with the whole process of submitting my writing to other people / sticking my neck out there. I’ve only been writing this blog for about six months, so I knew that it wasn’t really a realistic option for me to be selected. I thought that just feeling “connected” to the competition would be fun as it all unfolded. I figured that a few of my blogging friends would be in the competition so it would be fun to be “along for the ride.”
Last week the Top 13 bloggers were named. I was really excited to see which of my friends would be competing over the next 12 weeks. I was already planning some ideas for ways I could help them get the word out on my blog’s Facebook page to encourage my friends and followers to vote for them. (If you are on Facebook and haven’t clicked that cute little icon over in the sidebar to Like and follow my page, you can click this link and you will see my page. Just click “Like” … then you should also hover over the Like button so you can hit “Get Notifications” and “Show in Newsfeed.” That way you can see all the funny stuff I post there.)
Well, I was completely floored when I saw my blog pop up as one of the Top 13. Out of 219 “auditions,” mine was selected as one of the top submissions. I gasped and cried and nearly peed my pants. (I wish that were less literal than it is … I’ve got no pride, I tell ya!)
The competition is under way. I’ve submitted my first post for the judges to look at. (As our “introduce yourself to the readers” type post, we had to write our own eulogy. There’s a Play-Along if you’d like to write yours too, then you can link it up on the site. Just click here for the details.)
On Wednesday at noon CST the posts and voting will go live. And that’s when I’m gonna really need help from you! I’d love for you to head to Blogger Idol’s website on Wednesday and Thursday so that you can vote for me and help me stay in the competition. I’d tell you that I’ll give you my firstborn in exchange for votes, but I don’t know that it would help. He’s a teenager after all. And, I don’t know that many people find teenagers adorable and cute and worth the trouble. (I kid, he’s a good egg … most of the time. He’s a normal boy though, which means he drives me crazy sometimes.) But, seriously, I would be incredibly grateful if you would take a minute or two (or ten or more) out of your day to read my submission on Wednesday and then vote for me on Wednesday and Thursday. (Just to be super clear, on Wednesday at noon CST the blog posts will go live and can be read. Voting will take place over Wednesday and Thursday. Friday we’ll find out who was eliminated.)
I’ll try not to be obnoxious and post a million things about this competition, but I’m not gonna lie. This is a pretty big deal to me. To be validated by a panel of experienced and accomplished writers as someone with talent, I’m truly flattered.
And, if I win, I think I could lobby Hubbinator for some kind of assistant … maybe I could get someone like Alice to clean the house and cook for us while I go on a worldwide concert tour. A girl can dream!!!
