I love it when people understand me. I mean really, really get me. It just feels good to know that someone has taken the time and energy to know what makes me tick–what makes me smile, cry and laugh. It’s like that feeling when someone buys you the most perfect gift that you didn’t even ask for. You didn’t know you needed or wanted it … until they gave it to you. And then you wonder how you ever lived without it. All because someone paid attention to what you do and say.
As a teacher, I like to get to know my students–their interests and hobbies, their friends and activities. This information can tell me a lot about each of them. I like to know these details because then I feel like I can find things they can relate to and include those in my lessons. Talking about the present progressive and subjunctive isn’t hugely intriguing unless you’re a grammar fiend. And let’s be honest–there aren’t many teenagers jonesing for conjugating verbs, generally speaking. It’s even less interesting in another language. So, I like to “keep it real” by using examples that connect with my students. Examples that apply to their lives. In order to do that without seeming contrived, I want and need to learn about my students. Besides that, I’m a people person. I like meeting people and getting to know them. It’s what I do, personally and professionally.
It’s always nice when I’ve had students who do the same with me. They remember that I have kids. Even maybe remembering that I’ve got a boy and a girl. Occasionally recalling their names. Most students are aware that I’m married. I’ve got a few siblings. A handful remember my alma maters. You know, some of the basics.
I tend to tell a lot of stories in my classes. They typically relate to the content or can be tied into a lesson … but not always. Sometimes they’re just entertaining. Occasionally students will ask “how’s so-and-so doing after (insert details from previous crazy story)?” I’m impressed to know that they were really listening. And that they cared enough to remember details about me, my life and the people in it. (I don’t want to hear any mumbo-jumbo about how they might just be trying to get me off topic to kill time in class. That’s not possible. They just like me and my stories. So shut it, m’kay? This is my blog and I get to tell it how I want to!!)
Anywho, that brings me back to the I-love-it-when-people-get-me thing.
One of my former students–who clearly paid attention in class, not to mention that she is now a friend of mine in her adult life–posted a link on my personal Facebook page today.
