My Seester had her second son last Friday. I’m staying with her this week to help take care of the baby (Nephew 2.0), her preschooler (Nephew) and to make sure she doesn’t overdo it following her surgery / delivery.
When she had Nephew four years ago I did the same thing. The Boy and Girl stayed with me then because it was summer. This time they’re in the throes of school and homework so they had to stay home with Hubbinator. I’d like to think they’re keeping up with things–doing dishes, wiping off the table, doing a load or two of laundry–but I’m a realist. I anticipate that I’ll be returning home to a shitstorm on Saturday.
I love that I can FaceTime with the Boy and Girl so I
can check up on them look to see how messy the house is hear how they’re doing and keep up our usual shenanigans.
I’m so used to life with self-sufficient tween / teenaged kids that I forget about some of the details of life with the newest ones. Some of the reminders I’ve had in the last few days:
There are few things sweeter than holding a sleeping baby.
After a few days of frequent baby holding, I will rock back and forth holding anything at all–a bag of groceries, a gallon of milk, my purse–trying to keep it “happy.”
Seeing a baby’s bobbling head reminds me that we’re all fragile.
Very small babies can produce very large amounts of poop.
Although babies aren’t strong enough to hold up their own head, their legs are strong enough to escape your grasp while changing a diaper and find their way into the poop of said diaper.
I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic (“I’m the king of the world!!”) when I can get a newborn to burp or fart.
Knowing I have a few more days with my Seester and the boys, my week is set to be pretty amazing!!
In addition to the fun with the Nephews, my adventure with Blogger Idol continues. Last week’s Idol Gives Back challenge gave me a chance to write about my belief in equality for everyone, the work the Human Rights Campaign does to secure equal rights for all Americans, the fun of the blog Snarkfest, and the great community that Wendy Nielsen has created with her blog. In a surprise twist, no one was eliminated since we were using our platforms to shine a light on other people and causes. I’m thrilled to say that my post received the highest judges’ score (woohoo!!) and I placed third overall when the popular vote was factored in.
(*A few of the other bloggers are pulling in really big numbers and they’re smoking contestants like me with a smaller “following”. I’m afraid I’m going to have to go out and start washing windshields for votes if I’m going to be in this for the long haul. If you have any suggestions to get more votes that don’t involve me taking off my clothes or watching Caillou, I’d love to hear ’em!)
This week’s challenge is Hot Topics (Wanna write a post for the Play Along? Click Here for details.) I wrote about a current body image issue that’s been trending in social media: thigh gap. It’s a topic that’s important to me since the Girl is twelve years old and at a particularly impressionable age for things like that. I hope you’ll check it out.
Voting goes from Noon CST on Wednesday, November 6th through 11:59 p.m. CST on Thursday, November 7th. Just click [HERE] to go to the Blogger Idol site. Scroll down to the little blue ballot box and click on Real Life Parenting and Vote. You can vote once per IP address–so vote from your smart phone, work computer, office mate’s computer, your boss’s computer (just kidding … unless you can pull that off, then I’m totally down with that!! ;D), home computer, laptop, iPad … anything you can get your hands on, just Vote, Baby!!
And, speaking of baby … here’s what might be the cutest baby picture ever:
